What is Volhard Puppy Aptitude Testing?

The Volhard Test is designed to measure a puppy’s temperament and suitability for different roles: family companion, service dog, therapy dog, or working dog.

It evaluates traits such as:

  • Social attraction – puppy’s friendliness toward humans

  • Following – willingness to follow a person

  • Retrieving – interest in carrying objects

  • Touch sensitivity – reaction to touch

  • Sound sensitivity – reaction to sudden noises

  • Sight sensitivity – reaction to moving objects

  • Stability – response to handling, stress, or change

  • Confidence – willingness to explore new environments

  • Dominance – assertiveness vs. submissiveness

  • Energy level – activity and playfulness

When is the Test Conducted?

We perform the Volhard Puppy Temperament Test when puppies are approximately seven weeks old, a key stage for social and behavioral development. Each puppy is individually assessed in a calm, controlled environment.

Our goal is to ensure each puppy has the foundation for a confident, adaptable life.

The Volhard Test allows us to help you choose which puppy is best suited for you in preparation for your lifestyle or training needs.
